Microbiology
As a basic biological science,
microbiology provides some of the most accessible research
tools for probing the nature of life processes. Our most
sophisticated understanding of the chemical and physical
principles behind living processes has arisen from studies
using microorganisms. This is in large part because
microbial cells share many biochemical properties with cells
of multi cellular organisms. And this, coupled with the fact
that microbial cells can reach extremely high cell densities
in culture and are readily amenable to genetic study, makes
them excellent models for understanding cell function in
plants and animals.
As an applied biological science,
microbiology deals with many important practical problems in
medicine, agriculture and industry. Some of the most
important diseases of humans, animals and plants are caused
by microorganisms. Microorganisms play major roles in soil
fertility and animal production. Many large-scale industrial
processes are microbial based, which has led to the
development of a whole new discipline, biotechnology.
Establishment of Department
The department of Microbiology is the
first post graduate department in the Marathwada region
where the undergraduate and postgraduate courses were run
under one roof. Twenty batches of PG have been successfully
coached till 2011. And most of the students passed form this
department has achieved success in academic and Industrial
filed like, pharmaceutical, food & dairy Industry, Public
health etc. all over India & abroad.
Another important achievement on the part
of the department is the upliftment of the faculty.
Initially the higher qualification of the faculty was
Master’s degree. But during the period of 10-12 years most
of teachers have achieved Doctoral Degree since then the
department microbiology is recognized as Research Centre by
SRTMU, Nanded.

Future Perspectives
-
The department achieved a prominent
position in imparting Microbiology knowledge, while
enriching the faculty and students.
-
Even though we are at budding stage
in Research area, we look forward with positive set of
mind to contribute more. Hence we applied for major
Research project to UGC, New Delhi and also planning for
major Research project for DST and DBT which could
facilitate our department with advanced research
facilities.
-
Student association in Microbiology
(SAM) is presently at the College level and aim is to to
work at district level by opening its unit at various
places to undertake environment and health awareness
issues.
-
We are trying
to give consultancy to the farmers in management of soil
borne phytopathogens particularly for cash crops like
cotton, groundnut and soybean.
-
Further we are
also planning to formulate a consortium of plant growth
promoting Rhizobacteria which will boost overall vigor
of the crop in a cost-effective, environment and user
friendly manner. This shall be provided only when the
agencies are to contribute to generate required funding.
